Manny “Pacman” Paquiao, Boxing’s pound for pound King

Author: User Imagescattered brain (Who am I?)  //  Category: Personal, Sports and Fitness

Pacman did it again! On the night of December 6th, the Filipino boxing icon made history. Against seemingly insurmountable odds, Manny Pacquiao made a believer of both boxing aficionados and experts too. No one can dispute now that he is the best pound for pound boxer in the world.

Demolishing a great boxer like Oscar de la Joya who was overwhelmingly favored by experts and betting fans to win what was billed as the “Dream Fight”, within 8 rounds was no mean feat for Manny Pacquiao. Towering at 5feet 10 inches - 4 inches taller than Manny, heavier and with the more fight experience, everybody was saying Manny doesn’t stand a chance against the Golden Boy. That is, except Manny, his fatherly trainer Freddie Roach and of course Team Pacquiao.

True to his prediction that De la Joya will go down in the 9th round, Freddie Roach, who apparently has the inside track on De la Joya’s weaknesses having worked with him during De la Joya’s unsuccessful bid to wrest the Middleweight crown from Floyd Mayweather Jr., orchestrated a masterful plan that tarnished the legend of the Golden Boy and dealt one of the worst beating in De la Joya’s checkered ring career.

According to the experts, three factors did in Oscar de la Joya:

  • Speed - Pacman ran circles around the stunned Golden Boy with his speed and quickness. His foot speed enables him to step out of De la Joya’s path masterfully and hit his foe with well placed blows while De la Joya was still facing the wrong way. De la Joya was rendered hapless to use his vaunted left hook and counter punch simply because Pacquiao wasn’t there anymore before he can make his move.
  • Power - De la Joya being bigger and heftier is supposed to made mince-meat of Manny Pacquiao. It turned out the other way around. Pacman’s power comes from his devastating speed. After the first few rounds, De la Joya’s face was already a sorry mess and the nose bleeding from the power punches dished out by Manny Pacquiao. In the seventh round, De la Joya was staggering all over the ring and ready to fall from the pummeling he had been getting when cornered by the Pacman. By the 8th round it was all over for De la Joya. Manny “His corner man threw in the towel before the start of the 9th round - a TKO victory for the supposedly puny Manny Pacquiao.
  • Strategy - Using the ring, circling to the left of De la Joya, being patient and not attacking wildly  but picking his spots - were some of the ring generalship displayed by Manny Pacquiao following Freddie Roach’s master plan which confused and frustrated De la Joya and spelled defeat for the Golden
    Boy.

It was David slaying Goliath.  Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s smashing victory over legend Oscar de la Joya installs him as the undisputed pound for pound king in the world of boxing. And made a believer of everyone. No doubt about it this time…

Ways To Spark Attraction

Author: User Imagescattered brain (Who am I?)  //  Category: Dating, Relationship

What is the secret to being irresistible to a man? Not just about physical beauty, or how intelligent or “nice” you are, because that’s not always the case.

Here are some do’s and don’t’s when it comes to being irresistible to a man:

WRONG WAY: Keep moving towards him and fill in any and all empty space that you sense between  you. Tell him how much you like him and share all the thoughts and feelings that are racing through your mind.

BETTER WAY: Take time to enjoy the connection  that you’re sharing, and don’t try and rush ahead. Do things that engage him and capture his  interest, and then sit back and let him come to you a bit too. Give him time and space in your interactions to come to you with his feelings.

WRONG WAY: Kill him with kindness by  complimenting him every chance you get, calling him all the time, doing favors for him without him even asking… and generally doing whatever you can to be a special “friend” and companion to him.

BETTER WAY: Think “playful” instead of just nice, as you don’t want to be his friend. Instead, be  unpredictable and intriguing. Create tension and  interest by not always doing or saying the  “obvious” thing. This will keep him thinking and  wondering about you, and get him doing things to get more of your time and attention.

WRONG WAY: Sleep with him in the hopes that by  being close and intimate he’ll realize how much he likes you, how amazing you both are together, and want a relationship. Act and talk to him like you’re already in a serious and committed  relationship, even though you’ve never talked  about it. Get upset when you don’t see that he  wants a relationship after you’re physical with  him.

BETTER WAY: Don’t make the mistake of hoping  that sex will bring him closer to you and set up your relationship. Communicate to a man that  you’re SELECTIVE, and that you respect yourself more than you need a relationship.

20 Ways to be HAPPY!

Author: User Imagescattered brain (Who am I?)  //  Category: Personal

MIND YOUR BODY By Willie T. Ong, MD
November 25, 2008 12:00 AM

• Decide to be happy. Make a plan. Think of ways and things that bring you happiness. Set happy goals not just for yourself but include others, too. Then, think of what to do next.

• Use your talents. Identify your strengths. Can you sing, dance, draw, paint, write, or speak? Find and cultivate these strengths of yours. Focus on them and they will bring you confidence and satisfaction. Do what you were meant to do in this world.

• Play. Play with your kids. Have fun with friends. Take time to relax and play. There’s nothing wrong with having fun and liking your work. Go through your normal day in an easy and light manner.

• Be curious. Try to see happiness around you. Watch the sunrise, feel the cool breeze, listen to the birds chirping and see people smiling. Nature is full of happiness.

• Count your blessings. Be grateful and happy with what you have. Accept the blessings that you have and think positively about the things you do not have. Maybe you weren’t meant to get it anyway and that something better is in store. Look at the bright side always.

• Like yourself. Everybody commits a mistake at some point in their lives. It’s part of our learning process, whether it’s because of our youth or ignorance. Try to make amends on the mistakes you made and then let it go. A wise man said that it’s the things we didn’t do that we later regret, and not the things and mistakes that we did.

• Pamper yourself. After a long work day, treat yourself to a warm, refreshing bath. Enjoy your favorite magazine. Tinker around with your hobbies. And when you feel like a kid, bring out the child in you.

• Enjoy close relationships. A unique study shows that talking to a supportive friend is as effective as taking a tablet of pain reliever. There is something heavenly in true and caring friends. Invest your time in building close relationships. They are as good as money in the bank.

• Find positive people. Surround yourself with positive and happy people. Find good mentors. They can be the key to your success. Some believe the other person’s good influence and good karma will also bring you luck. Happy people tend to be more supportive of others, too.

• Volunteer to help someone in need. If you want to receive P2,000 worth of happiness, donate P2,000 to your favorite charity. Studies show that the more people give to others, the happier they become.

• Think happy thoughts. Positive thinking proponent Norman Vincent Peale says that if a negative thought should enter your mind, you should immediately block it with a positive one. If a fearful thought crosses your mind, tell yourself that you’ll overcome it, and that you’ll be alright. Think positive.

• See and hear happy news. Read inspiring books. Watch happy movies. Look for the good news in the papers and magazines. Fill your minds with positive and constructive news.

• Laugh. If you watched Patch Adams, you know that the doctor’s secret cure for his patients is to simply make them laugh. Wearing a clown’s makeup, Dr. Adams brings joy to cancer-stricken kids. A study by Dr. Lee Berk shows that watching an hour of comedy movie releases 27 percent more good endorphins in the body. Endorphins help reduce pain and stress, and boost the immune system.

• Follow your instincts. In the best-selling book Blink, author Malcolm Gladwell says our minds can make a wise decision based on our gut feel or intuition. Most of the time, this turns out correctly. In business decisions and relationships, it pays to listen to this inner voice of wisdom.

• Be healthy. Being healthy is a prerequisite to being happy. Get a checkup and see your doctor. Avoid alcohol and cigarettes.

• Eat healthy and exercise. Go for something green or orange. Green leafy vegetables and orange-colored tomatoes, carrots, and citrus fruits are high in antioxidants. Exercise moderately and stay active for your age.

• Find the right amount of stress. Studies show that too much stress from work can lead to anxiety, restlessness, and anger. However, too little stress can also lead to boredom. The secret is in finding the right amount of work that will make you productive and happy.

• Sleep. Make sure that you get adequate sleep and rest, like around seven to eight hours. If you have insomnia, just lying in bed and thinking happy and restful thoughts can relax your body, too.

• Be in love. Gerontology professor Dr. David Demko believes that being in love can prolong one’s life by as much as seven years. Married people or those with close relationships are generally happier compared to single people living alone. If you don’t have a partner, then having a close friend, a pet or a hobby can be a substitute.

• Believe. Studies show that people who have a strong sense of spirituality are 40-percent happier than those who don’t. People who hope for a brighter future and sense a meaning and purpose in their lives are happier and more fulfilled.

• Try to have faith in yourself. Have faith, too, in the goodness of others. And finally, have faith in God. If you’re not happy today, don’t worry, because slowly things will get better. It always does. You have all the resources you need to be happy.

Myths and Facts About Water

Author: User Imagescattered brain (Who am I?)  //  Category: Health and Wellness

Good day and Happy Sunday to ya’ll!..

Today, I just want to share this article called “Myths and Facts About Water” written by Ching M. Alano  that I’ve read earlier from the Sunday edition of The Philippine Star.

Are we having liquidity problems?

Believe it or not, two thirds of our body is water. We can survive without food for 81 days but without water, we die in five days, according to Dr. Yunjo Chung, author of The Cleaning Side of Medicine. If you lose but five percent of you total water, you will start to hallucinate, become disoriented, and experience twitching muscles. If you lose 15 percent of your water, your life is in grave danger.

The good doctor tells his patients that water is nature’s best beverage-vis-avis soda or soft drink. Just to compare: good drinking water has oxygen, Dr. Chung points out, while soda has dissolved carbon dioxide gas under pressure. And as we learned in biology class in high school, we breath oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.

Yes, we can’t live without water. But all these years, we’ve lived with so many myths/false notions about water. So, now, let’s pour out the facts about water.

MYTH: The 1st commandment of good health decrees that we must drink at least 8 ounce glasses of water a day.

FACT: A lot of nutrition experts have no idea where this rule, which has been arbitrarily handed down through the ages, comes from. But here’s one theory: the number was probably based on the fluid intake measurements taken decades ago among hospital patients on IV’s. It has become since a convenient reference point, especially for those prone to dehydration like children, active people, and the elderly - and not really a measure of what people ought to drink.

The experts agree that an average person loses 10 cups (one cup=eight ounces) of fluid per day but also takes in 4 cups of water from food, leaving a need to drink only six glasses to make up the difference. That is a tad short of the recommended 8 to 10 glasses daily. The eight-by-eight rule is a gross overestimate, say kidney specialists. To replace daily losses of water, according to a kidney physiologist, an average-size adult with healthy kidneys needs no more than one liter of fluid (or four eight-ounce glasses).

MYTH: It’s okay to take water in excess.

FACT: Taking too much water (overdehydration) is as dangerous is taking no water at all (dehydration). Overdehydration can lead to nausea, weakness, dizziness, trembling hands, cramping, and even make one lose consciousness. Thus, Dr. Chung warns his patients not to drink over 12 eight-ounce glasses (about 3,000 cc). The rule of thumb to follow is: Everything in moderation.

MYTH: We get enough water from iced tea, soft drinks, juices and coffee.

FACT: Many drinks that we consume today are considered diuretics (causing us to urinate) and do not help hydrate the body on a cellular level. Caffeinated beverages do not hydrate the body. Truth is, for every cup of caffeinated beverage we take, we need to drink two additional cups of water to offset the dehydrating effects of caffeine. Thus, your best bet is water.

MYTH: Fresh water makes up 50 percent of all water resources on earth.

FACT: Only three percent of all water on earth is fresh (read: drinkable).

The United Nations estimates that a person needs a minimum of 50 liters of water a day for drinking, washing, cooking, and sanitation, which sadly over a billion people in the world don’t have access to. Antarctica is said to hold about 75 percent of the world’s fresh water and 9 percent of the world’s ice - but of course, that cannot be melted for daily use.

MYTH: There is much less fresh water today than there was 100 years ago.

FACT: Certainly not! The supply of fresh water is the same as it was 10 or more years ago, long before you and I were born. It may seem less today because the demand for water is so much more (and is likely to be even more in the next 100 years). A note of warning: Our fresh water supply is finite and becoming contaminated to the point where rainwater renewal is not viable. Thus, everyone should  do his/her part to conserve and protect water resources.

I must confess I’m guilty of being ignorant about water’s importance to general health. I’m not the kind of  person who drinks water everyday.. I can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner  without drinking water at all.. I’d rather drink, perhaps the better word is addicted, to soda or any kind of soft drinks or juices than water. I don’t know why, but I’ve been doing this for years now. Reading this article is an eye opener for me.. So, I Hope with this “Myths and Facts About Water” will bring back a healthier lifestyle to all of us.

“Shopingitis”: A New Disease?

Author: User Imagescattered brain (Who am I?)  //  Category: News and Society

Shoppingitis?

According to the Philippines Star LIFESTYLE, in the Philippines where 3 of the 10 biggest malls in the world are found, shopping is undeniably a national past time. Dubbed “Shoppingitis” this out-of-control shopping malady is a world-wide phenomenon afflicting just about anyone.

The October 2006 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry reported that at some point in the lives of an estimated 5.8 percent of the US population, shopping will become a source of shame, a cry for help, the cause of job losses and broken relationships, a road to financial ruin. They are “compulsive buyers” - troubled by intrusive impulses to shop, prone to lose track of time while doing so, plagued by post-purchase remorse, guilt and financial woes, and sometimes given up by love ones. And as the drumbeat of the depressing economic indicators accelerates, they are a group coming out of the closet. Wow!

Is it a disorder?

There is little doubt that compulsive shopping can cause severe impairment and distress - two key criteria for formal recognition as a mental disorder. “You don’t want to medicalize normal behavior,” says Eric Hollander, MD, chairman of psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. But a small percentage of consumers, he says, seem to suffer from “a profound deficit” in the ability to resist their impulse to shop, despite negative consequences. For those people, Hollander says, the term disorder “seem to fit.”

Is it a gender thing?

If those seeking help are nay gauge, it presupposes that compulsive shopping is overwhelmingly a female condition. Some 80% of those who came forward, according to the experts, are women. But this doesn’t suggest that men are not just as likely to go on buying binges. Men just don’t come forward for help.

Compulsive buying is not unlike drug addiction where addicts seek a “fix”. Shopping brings a rush of “relief” from pent-up emotions or uncomfortable feelings that usually build up in the hours or days before a shopping expedition. But a wave of disinterest, guilt or remorse quickly followed and the resulting ill feeling builds again and the compulsive shopper feels the need for another shopping fix. The cycle continues.

Is there treatment?

Health authorities, primarily psychotherapists, say a two-pronged attack can break the shopping addiction cycle. Firstly, the advice is to join a group psychotherapy sessions where participants are enjoined to keep journals and shopping lists that track their moods, impulses and household needs. When besiege by shopping urges, patients record their answers to such questions as: Why am I here? How do I feel? Do I need this? What if I wait? How will I pay for it? With such rigorous self- examination experts say breaking the spell won’t be too hard to achieve. They have to understand what the triggers are, what the emotional consequence is, what happens after the bill comes. They also need to think about what their values are and their goals in life.

Secondly, medical and therapy intervention are viewed as essential. Preliminary studies have found that antidepressants that increase the availability of the “neurochemical serotonin” in the brain can ease shopping compulsion. And Naltrexone, a drug that blunts the inebriating effects of alcohol, has shown modest effectiveness in curbing the urge to shop.

Shoppingitis anyone?
