Herewith is an overview on the “Background Check” article I was tasked to do as a “Test” - although I would have preferred being given specific guidelines and/or requirements for a more credible/noteworthy write-up.

A background check serves as a convenient tool for obtaining information about a person or persons. For  diverse reasons and purposes ranging from the relevant to the ridiculous, as the persons or entitles wanting the background information.

The uses of background checks include, but are not limited, to the following:

• Employment screening -  Employers make it a matter of policy to pre-screen applicants to check the accuracy of the applicant’s claims especially in high security or position of trust. Passing on a resume may not be enough - more so if there is an appearance or suspicion of faking one’s credentials. Well, what employer would want to put himself in an untenable situation where the post-hired employee was later found to have lied and made misrepresentations about his/her employment record.

• Education record - Primarily to see if the potential employee had graduated and in fact received a college degree, graduate or masters degree as alleged.

• Financial information - Credit check, even liens and judgments and bankruptcies.

• Criminal record - Isn’t it best to be sure you’re not hiring a person with criminal record!

• The ridiculous - Ridiculous as it may appear, there are insecure, suspicious would-be in-laws, even the bride or groom themselves, who do background checks to ensure that the bride or groom-to-be is what she or he purport to be, not only after the money, or if at all eligible to marry.

Whatever the reason or purpose, the object of a background check may have no choice but to grin and bear it and go along for the ride…
